6 phones, 5 megapixels each, battle is out for the number 1 spot

5mpcamcrop.jpg

Phone Arena did a brilliant comparison of all the major 5 megapixel cameras out on the market right now (Nokia N82, Nokia N95 8GB, Sony Ericsson K850i, Samsung G600, Samsung G800, LG Viewty) and posted a ton of image samples so that you can form your own opinion at the end of the day.

Judging by the pictures they took I’m going to have to agree that the Samsung G600 is the best camera during the day, but the N82 is the best camera over all as it is absolutely fantastic in low light and also provides the best macro mode out of the bunch.

One small request, next time you do this kind of comparison take a picture of people as the number one thing people take pictures of is their loved ones and drunken mates at the local pub.

Sony Ericsson to bundle F-Secure Mobile Security on select smartphones

Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola or Samsung. All you have to do is read carefully for the security warnings and hit “No” when in doubt. It’s that easy… Full release follows after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE - F-Secure Corporation, the global leader in providing security as a service through mobile operators and Internet Service Providers, is today announcing the availability of its Mobile Security product for the UIQ platform. F-Secure and Sony Ericsson are partnering on supplying mobile security to Sony Ericsson’s smartphones.

A trial version of the F-Secure Mobile Security 3.3 for UIQ will be available in selected Sony Ericsson UIQ devices. The companies will co-operate closely together in the area of mobile security to make sure that smartphones will continue to offer a safe and rich mobile computing experience.

As modern smartphones are extremely versatile and highly connected computing devices, they need the same kind of protection as PC’s do. The F-Secure Mobile Security 3.3 for UIQ combines an integrated antivirus and firewall. With similar solutions already available for S60 and Windows Mobile it completes the F-Secure offering of award-winning solutions for the most popular platforms in the rapidly growing smartphone market. The growing PC-like usage of smartphones will drive the services of the mobile internet and it is important for the industry now to put in place safeguards that will prevent a similar development of the threat situation as has been seen with PC’s.

“We are very proud and happy about the UIQ product and the co-operation. Our complete mobile product range will enable us to continue our leadership in the area of mobile security. We have seen increasing demand for mobile security solutions also from mobile operators, who want to offer their customers a secure user experience in all situations and on all platforms. We have products for all the major open smartphone platforms at the moment, and we will continue to expand our security solutions offering to meet the growing needs in the market”, says Samu Konttinen, Vice President, Mobile Solutions Business Unit, F-Secure.

The F-Secure Mobile Security 3.3 for UIQ will also be available for subscription through the F-Secure Mobile eStore.

New 5 megapixel Sony Ericsson device leaked

New 5 megapixel Sony Ericsson device leaked

With Mobile World Congress coming up in exactly 3 weeks we’re going to see more and more leaks coming out from people who have absolutely no restraint when it comes to keeping secrets. This new 5 megapixel Sony Ericsson device is supposed to have a 16 million color QVGA (320×240) screen, a first for Sony Ericsson. While it will not have a Xenon flash like it’s older brother the K850i, at least we get a regular looking dpad and T9 keyboard. Not digging the color scheme, but knowing SE there will be other variants. No word as to which bands this device supports.

[Via: Slashphone]

Update: Thanks to D3RK for linking me to GSM Arena who says they’ve seen the phone and say it is only a 3 megapixel unit. We will have to wait and see.

If this leaked press release schedule is to be believed, which is plausible since Sony Ericsson does a horrible job at protecting their secrets, then we are due to see 3 announcements within the span of less than 3 weeks. On the 24th of January in India we’re going to probably see the introduction of new low end devices, 27th of January should give us a peak into SE’s music strategy and the 10th of February is Mobile World Congress (formerly 3GSM) which is a phone addicts dream show from what I hear.

In other news Engadget reports that Xperia is the name of Sony Ericsson’s new super phone since the trademark lists it as capable of doing things like multimedia, navigation and making phone calls. We’re just going to have to wait and see.

      • ARM ships 10 billionth chip

        armlogosmall

ARM (Advanced RISC Machines) have announced that they have shipped their 10 billionth chip - a stat which I find amazing….

These days the chips are providing the processing power for everything from iPod to your Netgear router - but some time ago, the origins of ARM were far more humble.

Anyone in the UK will probably remember the Acorn series of computers, including this veritable bad-boy - the Archimedes (A3010):

        A3010

Acorns sold pretty well in to Schools back in the day, and I’m sure many of you will remember using them (not to be confused with RM - Research Machines). Well things have come on a bit since then, and now you would find ARM chips in numerous mobile devices - recent examples of which being the LG Viewty, Nokia N95″ target=”_blank”>Nokia N95, and Sony Ericsson P1i - oh, and this not very well know device, called an iPhone?!

Crucially though, ARM doesn’t manufacture the chips itself (can you imagine the size of a facility that was shipping 3bn chips per year?) - it licenses it’s technology.

One of those rare instances of a company you may not have heard of, making a massive impact on the world of Mobile devices - chances are you probably own a device (or more than one) with an ARM chip in it - amazing!
