Sony Ericsson G702 BeiBei, Z780i pass through FCC
It's FCC rather than Sony Ericsson that revealed us the model number of the BeiBei smartphone - G702. BeiBei smartphone - G702. The upcoming device sports all the things a modern smartphone user could need — including GSP, WiFi and a touchscreen. It's 3G enabled, though U.S. frequencies are left out, making us think why the Swedish-Japanese folks bothered to go through FCC's approval process. Not that this is their first time to do so… Alongside the European model, we're also noticing the G702c variant, which is most likely targeted towards the Chinese market.

In the other news, another Sony Ericsson handset passed the FCC hurdle. The Z780i clamshell is obviously heading to AT&T, or at least the carrier's badge suggests so. This time the right 3G/HSDPA frequencies are on board and my guess is we could expect to see it launched in the U.S. in the coming weeks and months…

Sony Ericsson enhances Web Video Discovery with Veveo

Sony Ericsson enhances Web Video Discovery with Veveo
Veveo™ Inc., has announced an "extraordinary" new web video experience for Sony Ericsson Mobile phone owners. Through the SE video-enabled mobile/web portal, customers will have access to over 150m (!) web videos via vtap - which is an apparently unique mobile web video service. vtap allows rapid search and viewing of web videos from sites […]

v4.pngVeveo™ Inc., has announced an "extraordinary" new web video experience for Sony Ericsson Mobile phone owners. Through the SE video-enabled mobile/web portal, customers will have access to over 150m (!) web videos via vtap - which is an apparently unique mobile web video service. vtap allows rapid search and viewing of web videos from sites such as YouTube™, DailyMotion™, and MySpace™ - all using their existing data services.

The intelligence of the vtap solution starts checking videos on input of the first character of text string in to the search area, making results quicker to appear. There is also grouping of video results together in to folders, allowing dynamic menus of results to be generated.

vtap also maintains an indes of more than 150m web videos which are constantly updated - having set up a profile you can collect, organise, and share video as you like.

vtap has been optimised for a selection of Sony Ericsson’s handsets:

The service is available immediately for Sony Ericsson Java Platform 8 (JP8) enabled handsets models: Z770i, K850i, W910i, K660i, W890i, Z750i and Sony Ericsson’s JP7 models: W880i, K810i, T650i, K530i, W580i, K770i, W660i. The service will support English, French, Italian, German and Spanish languages.

Comment: Hmmm, interesting - it will be great to hear feedback from any IntoMobile readers that have one of the above handsets, and happen to try it. My personal experience of working with Mobile Video is that converting (or "transcoding" as we like to say) it can be extremely challenging, especially from some of the more advanced web video formats….

R300 Radio and C902 Cyber-shot. The first one is designed for developing countries to allow users to take radio (both AM and FM) with them, where ever they are. The other, more interesting device is the latest and baddest Cyber-shot phone so far - C902. As you're probably aware, this face-detection baby packs 5 megapixel camera into a stylish slim casing and we love it for that.

Now the question is when we'll see the mentioned two devices hitting the U.S. market. Honestly, we don't have a clue. As a matter of fact, we don't even know whether the Swedish-Japanese handset maker will ever push them to North American consumers. We certainly hope that will be the case with the C902 model, but our hope isn't actually something you can count on…

first Sony Ericsson BeiBei leaked photos. As far as we know, the upcoming device will run the latest version of UIQ (3.3) on top of Symbian OS, and will also boast such things as some camera (we're not sure about the megapixel count), WiFi and Bluetooth. We would certainly like to see HSDPA on the list too, but we're not sure about that one either.

It's likely the Swedish-Japanese handset maker won't market the BeiBei as a smartphone — rather, they'll probably sell it to all round feature phone users, which want an extra function or two from time to time. They're already using the same/similar concept with the G700 and G900 models. In that sense, Sony Ericsson may have a winner with the BeiBei.

What follows are several photos of the upcoming device, as well as four screenshots. Enjoy!

We're not sure whether to trust this because of all the release date confusions in the past, and honestly I hope the Swedish-Japanese handset maker will release the XPERIA X1 before mid-September, but according to Handango's newsletter that's about the time you'll be able to grab the all-in-one Windows Mobile wonder from Sony Ericsson. They said H2 2008 and we always thought it's July, or at least hoped that will be the case. The good thing, though, is the X1 is still on schedule for launch this year as we reported previously.

Anyway, the device will come with Handango's InHand service, meaning more software downloads will be available at your fingertips. Good ol' Handango is in the midst of "seeking the best products for this device" that will support the gorgeous WVGA screen. Now if only someone could borrow me some patience till September that would be awesome. ;(

XPERIA X1 as the single best Windows Mobile phone announced to date. The newly released XPERIA white paper adds two important details to the mix. Apparently, once it's released in September, the XPERIA X1 will sport:

    1. 256MB of SDRAM and 512MB of NAND Flash - that's the largest amount of memory any smartphone has. Or at least I'm not aware some other device has that much memory available.
    2. High-capacity 1500 mAh lithium polymer battery that should reportedly provide users with up to 10 hours of talk time using GSM or 6.5 hours using UMTS, or 3.1 hours if their making video calls all the time.

What can I say - I want one! A whole summer divide us from owning the XPERIA. ;(

Q1 2008 has delivered a shake-up in the rankings of Mobile Handset Vendors in India.

Nokia continues to dominate, follow by Sony Ericsson. However, Samsung have now passed Motorola to take 3rd position (echoing changes that we have seen occurring in other countries).

If you want some stats, and I'm sure you do, Nokia are around the 70% (!) mark, whereas SEM is at about 8%, and Samsung at 7%. Motorola are now around the 6% mark.

Samsung, which according to some sources is the world's second largest handset vendor, is planning to double it's market share in India by end of year (remember above is only Q1 stats) - you can expect a slew of new devices covering across all the tiers/segments of the market.

Motorola on the other hand will need to ship high volumes of handsets over the next few months to reverse the trend above - something that no doubt many industry commentators will be watching closely.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 superphone that took the industry by storm just a couple months ago has taken an unfortunate back-burner position. Don't misunderstand, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is still an incredible piece of kit for which many people (yours truly included) would sacrifice a non-essential appendage - it's just that other handset news has pushed the XPERIA X1 out of the news cycle.

So, it's good to see the newest white paper on the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. We already know with a fair degree of certainty what the X1 will look like and what kind of features it will boast when it launches, but there are a couple significant insights lying within the white paper.

First, and foremost, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 will launch with two distinct variants. The US, in all its awkwardly non-conforming greatness, will be seeing the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1a hit its shores. The "a" presumably indicates that the X1a will be pulling duty as the Windows Mobile superphone of choice on AT&T's 3G network. The rest of the world will be getting the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1c.

The XPERIA X1a will be distinguished from its X1c sibling in its choice of 3G frequency support. The X1a will sport a quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) radio and a tri-band (850/1900/2100Mhz) UMTS/HSPA radio for 3G data connectivity, while the X1c changes things up with a tri-band (900/1900/2100Mhz) UMTS/HSPA 3G radio. The XPERIA X1c should be shipped to the rest of the world with 3G frequency support in the 900Mhz band in favor of the 850Mhz band that us Americans are so fond of.

Notable is the 10 hours of GSM talk time or 6.5 hours of 3G talk time. Hit up the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 whitepaper PDF here for the rest of the detailed device specs, or just click on the image gallery below.

Flash Lite and Java ME development platforms. The so called Project Capuchin make it possible to "combine the richness of Flash Lite and Java ME technologies" allowing developers to "utilize the best attributes of both software stacks to create content-rich mobile applications." The technology will be made available during the H2 2008.

Project Capuchin will provide developers with an intuitive tool to create applications with a cleaner user interface (UI) without sacrificing the strong, feature rich and widely deployed Java ME infrastructure, including secure, well-developed content distribution. Project Capuchin's bridging software will empower two distinct developer communities to leverage their respective expertises to create the next generation of highly engaging and immersive mobile content.

To put it in other words, expect to see Flash Lite content encapsulated in Java ME applications. More advanced capabilities will allow Flash Lite to handle an entire presentation layer and make it possible to create Java ME applications where some or all UI components are defined in Flash.
