We're seeing an impressive 8.1 megapixel image sensor sitting behind those legendary auto-focus Cyber-Shot optics. And, with HSPA (both HSDPA and HSUPA), WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, and VGA video capture (@ 30fps) rounding out the feature-set, the Sony Ericsson C905 is shaping up to be a  serious smartphone, the likes of which Nokia's N-series will have to counter if they want to stay on top of the cameraphone market.

new devices, today Sony Ericsson also announced the World View 2008 competition, allowing camera phone owners around the world to compete and win "phenomenal prizes."

  • The People's Choice prize is awarded to the person who receives the most votes from the public around the world and includes a "trip of a lifetime" worth 5,000 GPB/6,250 EUR.
  • The Experts' Choice winner, on the other hand, is chosen by Sony Ericsson's panel of elite photography judges. The main prize is once-in-a-lifetime trip worth 10,000 GBP/12,500 EUR.

It's not an easy task to win the World View competition. 2007's World View winner, Wang Feng from China comments on the image that won him the prestigious title: "I took the image after my car fell into a ditch and got covered in mud. As I was trying to get the car out, the fly landed on the windscreen and I thought it was the perfect picture. I would not have captured it if I had not had my camera phone with me."

Funny or not, he'll be travelling soon. And you could do the same, too. More information about World View 2008 is available from here.

Sony Ericsson Z780 passing the FCC hurdle all with the AT&T badge, meaning that the documentation is in place and now it's all about the right timing. We also have few images to prove the device is ready, but that doesn't mean we're know the exact announcement/launch date. It seems all AT&T is waiting is for the iDust to settle a bit. Then they'll be able to put the Z780 in the spotlight, alongside (or not) its older brother, the Z750 model… More images follow after the jump.

With news that Google's Android-push will take just a bit longer than we would prefer, it's fitting that Nokia has just announced that it will be working to bring together the fragmented Symbian environment under a single, open-source umbrella.

Nokia has been working closely with Symbian for years with S60 development, and it seems that the Finnish handset manufacturer wants to go open-source with their mobile OS. To that end, Nokia will be increasing their already substantial stake in Symbian Limited in order to take Symbian OS and S60 open-source.

Nokia has joined forces with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone to form the non-profit Symbian Foundation in an effort to further Symbian development as an open-source mobile platform. The Symbian Foundation was formed to increase awareness and appeal of a unified Symbian platform as well as provide the developers with a unified development environment for an open-source Symbian. The move will unite the Symbian OS, S60, UIQ, and MOAP platforms to give Google's open-source Android platform a run for its money.

Nokia bringing their Symbian OS and S60 contribution to the table, the Symbian Foundation wil have the necessary components to develop a unified mobile platform with a common UI framework.

Pending the acquisition of Symbian Limited, the Symbian Foundation is expected to go live in 1H 2009 - just in time to give the Android folks a serious sweat.

        • Wireless connectivity: WiFi with DLNA-support, Bluetooth, HSDPA.
