covered back in May? Basically, the Swedish-Japanese handset maker developed a Java ME API that defines a bridge between the Java ME and Adobe Flash Lite programming environments, making it possible to use Flash Lite tools while still having access to all phone services through Java ME. Now they’ve come up with a concrete tool called Swf2Jar. Here’s what it does:

The Swf2Jar 1.0 tool automatically packages together a jar containing a Java MIDlet class and a Flash file (.swf). The simplest Project Capuchin application is to package existing Flash Lite content in a MIDlet jar file which applies Java security, distribution methods and installation.

On the downside, though, is that the first phone which is Project Capuchin enabled is the upcoming Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot. That means we’ll have to wait for quite some time to see anything real/massive from this technology. In the meantime, check out this page on Sony Ericsson Developer World for more information about Swf2Jar.

While some handset manufacturers seem to be defying the global economic turndown and continuing to push ahead in mobile phone sales, other mobile phone manufacturers are struggling to keep pace. Sony Ericsson’s fortunes are apparently much more bleak than Nokia’s. In their most recent financial statement, Sony Ericsson posted massive 2Q 2008 profit declines compared to the same period last year.

The Japanese-Swedish mobile phone manufacturer noted that net profit for the second quarter amounted to a mere $6 million - a 97% dteaser site to promote its upcoming Walkman phones. The move toward viral marketing of their next-generation handsets could be a sign that Sony Ericsson has realized its marketing weaknesses and is changing up its gameplan to appeal to the more savvy mobile phone consumer.

Keep reading for the full press release.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson on Friday posted a 97 percent drop in second-quarter earnings and said it would slash 2,000 jobs worldwide in a move to cut costs.

The LM Ericsson and Sony Corp. joint venture blamed the earnings decline on tougher market conditions, higher development costs and negative effects from exchange rate fluctuations.

Company spokeswoman Lisa Canning in London said the company would cut 2,000 jobs “within the next 12 months” as part of an effort to reduce operational costs by 300 million euros ($470 million) per year.

In a statement, Sony Ericsson President Hideki Komiyama said his company estimates restructuring charges to “be of the same magnitude as our reduction in operating expenses.”

Net profit in the quarter fell to 6 million euros ($9.5 million), down sharply from 220 million euros in the same period a year ago.

Sales were down about 9 percent to 2.8 billion ($4.4 million), from 3.1 million euros in the second quarter in 2007.

The company had warned already last month that it expected to just break even before taxes in the quarter because of tougher competition and a continued slowing market growth in its mid- to high-end phones.

It was the second profit warning this year from Sony Ericsson, which usually ranks fourth or fifth among the world’s biggest mobile phone makers.

“Challenging market conditions are expected to prevail for Sony Ericsson for at least the rest of 2008,” the company said, “in particular for the third quarter.”

Sony Ericsson’s results were in stark contrast to the better-than-expected earnings report by market leader Nokia Corp. on Thursday. Nokia, which makes four of 10 handsets sold worldwide, said it expected the global market for cell phones to grow by 10 percent or more in 2008, upgrading an earlier estimate.

Sony Ericsson forecast the global market to grow at around 10 percent but with a continued decline in average selling prices.

The average selling price for Sony Ericsson handsets fell in the second quarter to 116 euros ($185), from 125 euros, because of a wider range of cheaper phones in its product portfolio and price competition on more expensive phones.

The company said its gross margin dropped to 23.1 percent, from 29.6 percent in the second quarter of 2007, while research and development costs jumped by 22 percent to 344 million euros ($545 million).

Shipped units reached 24.4 million in the quarter, Sony Ericsson said.

Sony Ericsson is apparently in talks to acquire BK Modi’s Spice Mobile - which is the handset company of the Modi group, and sells handsets under the Spice brand.

A top source in the Spice group confirmed the development and said that while talks were on, the deal had not been finalised. The source also added that initially, Spice Mobile had approached Sony Ericsson for a ‘wide-ranging collaboration and partnership’, but as the talks progressed, it was felt that an acquisition would suit both companies better.

It’s a sensible strategy from Sony Ericsson, and could result in a very quick rollout of budget-level handsets, and/or diversity in product portfolio. Nice.

Marketing and hype are keys to getting the consumer excited about the next big handset. Apple, HTC, Samsung, LG, Nokia all know that you have to get the market hyped up about an upcoming product launch if you want to sell boatloads of handsets. And, it seems Sony Ericsson is also getting in on the fun.

The Japanese-Swedish mobile phone manufacturer has launched a new web portal to highlight the past three years of Sony Ericsson Walkman phone history. Sony Ericsson is pushing their Walkman phone lineup’s media-playing prowess ahead of their new Walkman-branded mobile phone launches. The new Sony Ericsson Walkman phone portal urges visitors to return to the website on July 22 at 10am CET in anticipation of a “new chapter” of Walkman phones.

            ?

Unfortunately for Sony Ericsson, they’ve got one of the leakiest product pipelines in the industry. We’re looking for Sony Ericsson to launch one of, if not all, of their recently leaked handsets. The 5 megapixel camera-toting Sony Ericsson W902 (Patty), the lower-end Sony Ericsson W595 (linda) with a 3.2 megapixel camera, and entry-level Sony Ericsson W302 are all on our radar as possible candidates to be launched on July 22 - which would make for a nicely rounded product lineup from Sony Ericsson.

Head on over to the new Sony Ericsson Walkman phone website and brush up on previous chapters of SE Walkman handset history. Now we wait for July 22 to roll around.
