nascent 3G network recently. They’ve lit-up their 1700Mhz spectrum of 3G goodness in a smattering of cities across the US, but the US wireless carrier has been tight-lipped as to whether or not its 3G-compatible handsets are indeed 3G capable on T-Mobile’s AWS 1700Mhz 3G network. Today we’re getting more details on T-Mobile’s latest 3G handset - the Sony Ericsson TM506 Bella.

Last we heard, the Sony Ericsson TM506 was headed to T-Mobile in your choice of two color schemes. The Bella, as it’s known internally, was expected to  land on T-Mobile’s network with a 2 megapixel camera, aGPS, Bluetooth 2.0, and myFaves support - with a tri-band (850/1800/1900Mhz) GSM/EDGE radio. We speculated that the Sony Ericsson TM506 Bella would hit T-Mobile with a dual-band 3G radio in tow, but previous promotional materials left us wondering if T-Mobile was ever going to take the 3G-wraps off the SE Bella.

Well, T-Mobile has confirmed that their upcoming Sony Ericsson TM506 Bella will indeed be launching with a a dual-band (1700/2100Mhz) 3G radio to pull down wireless data at near-broadband speeds. The slim and stylish clamshell is expected to deliver 9.5 hours worth of talk time on GSM networks, with 3G calling good for 3.5 hours.

As expected, T-Mobile should launch the Sony Ericsson TM506 in early September. Pricing information is still not available.

Last we heard, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 was slated to go live during the second half of 2008 (with some rumors pointing to a UK launch in October-November) - a vague enough launch window to ensure that Sony Ericsson could cover its behind should they run in to development problems.

Today, it looks like Sony Ericsson was right to keep us all guessing as to exactly when the XPERIA X1 would usher in a new age of high-end smartphones. We WMExperts]

It’s been a while since I did it, so I thought I would re-visit the “Top 1o” handsets in UK retail - with information kindly provided by Mobile Choice UK. So let’s take contract devices first:

weekly top 10 contract devices in uk retail from 1 august courtesy of mobile choice uk

Not surprisingly the Tocco has made an appearance at the top of the chart, but it closely followed by Nokia’s star performers, the 6500 Slide, and N95 8GB. Nokia and Samsung also have a smattering of other devices each, comprising most of the rest of the Top 10.

As regards Prepay, it looks kinda like this:

weekly top 10 prepay devices in uk retail from 1 august courtesy of mobile choice uk

Samsung again occupy the top of the chart, but after that, it’s Nokia and old favourite Sony Ericsson all the way… a real mixture of older devices, plus newer budget ones in there too!

The Nordics (again, not a surprise) will be getting first crack at this, followed by the rest of Europe later in the year - and then globally in 2009.

PlayNow has some stiff competition though in the form of iTunes, and also Nokia’s various interweb offerings. One big weapon in the armoury is that the tracks will be DRM-free (yay!). Bring it on I say, the sooner we can get good choons and games on our SE Mobys, the sooner we’ll be truly free (or something like that….)!

Sony Ericsson TM506 Bella hitting T-Mobile on September 3 with 3G?

Sony Ericsson TM506 Bella hitting T-Mobile on September 3 with 3G?
T-Mobile’s up-and-coming 3G network is definitely something the company should be promoting to no end. T-Mobile’s up-and-coming 3G network is definitely something the company should be promoting to no end. Perhaps T-Mobile is waiting for their nascent 3G infrastructure to expand it footprint a bit more before they go about touting their faster data speeds and improved voice quality, but they should still be promoting compatible handsets as having 1700Mhz 3G frequency support.

Alas, the higher-ups at T-Mobile apparently don’t want to make it known that some of their currently available mobile phones can actually surf T-Mobile’s network at 3G speeds. And, that philosophy will carry over to upcoming handset releases. Case in point, the Sony Ericsson TM506 Bella.

Sony Ericsson Bella for some time, and the slick clamshell should do well with aGPS, web-feeds reader (RSS, podcasts, news), 2 megapixel camera, and support for 3G (UMTS/HSDPA) on the 1700Mhz and 2100Mhz frequency bands.

But, T-Mobile’s latest Sony Ericsson TM506 promotional materials fail to mention 3G data capability and aGPS altogether. Sure, T-Mobile mentions the camera, the stereo Bluetooth, email capabilities, and available color schemes, but they don’t seem to think that aGPS or 3G data connectivity are important enough to promote.

Whatever their reasons, we’re expecting T-Mobile to go live with the Sony Ericsson TM506 Bella on September 3. Look for the Sony Ericsson TM506 to be available in both Emerald Green on Black and Chrome on Amber/Black color schemes.

    C902's 5MP camera

…. well probably is the answer. And why the question? Well, read on…..

Sony Ericsson were kind enough to email me and let me know the C902 is now available (has been for a little while) - it comes with a much-touted 5MP camera. This is interesting to me, because I would contend that certain 5MP Mobile camera handsets do not take great photos (I’ve said as much before).

Oddly, the handset that I thought took the best pics (from the variety that I have had) was the SE K800i - it was only 3MP, but they were mind-blowingly good pixels from a very diminutive device! It’s successor, the K810i, didn’t seem quite as good to me. Moving on then to the K850i, again, I didn’t think it was quite as good - and that was a full 2MP more.

But of course the Megapixels only tell part of the story - the optics, and of course the camera module management software play a large part in deciding the image quality. So it was with great interest that received the email today, re-affirming that I could purchase the C902 - and my question still stands…. will the 5MP camera be good enough?

By good enough, I mean will it deliver everyday-usage shots that perceptibly are free from noise, have good colour balance - but most importantly - that I believe are good? Perception of quality is in the eye of the beholder, and if your opinion on anything is that the quality isn’t there, then you are right - and so is everyone else, with their own opinions. But only your opinion counts if it is your device!

In my opinion, 5MP camera modules on devices should be able to produce a reasonable picture - good enough to print out on a 6″x4″ paper at least. From my past posts, the consensus appeared to be that really the N82 from Nokia was the best all-rounder. So, I contend, will the C902’s 5MP camera deliver the goods? Anyone who is owning one and using the camera, please do feel free to add a comment to this post!

I would say the bare fact that the W760a model (where “a” stands for America) exists says more about Sony Ericsson plans than the small logo on the device. After all, you don’t have to be a Photoshop master to make that image. Simple pasting the AT&T’s circle is about all it takes…

Anyway, nothing is confirmed at this stage, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we’ll see the W760 hitting the U.S. sooner rather than later. It’s one of the best feature phones on the market, featuring that cool Walkman music player, stereo Bluetooth, GPS, 3.2 megapixel camera, motion sensor, and more.
