latest Sony Ericsson Walkman phones - the W302, W595 and W902. Devices they scored are prototype units, but they drew some conclusions, nonetheless.

Here’s what they think about each on of the devices:

  • W302 - “a very cute budget solution from the Walkman series, mainly offering a very attractive design.”
  • W595 - “…the key feature which will help it repeat W580’s success is the attractive design.”
  • W902 - “…thanks to the promising 5-megapixel camera, it could become a rival of the new mid-level cameraphones, and thus transforming in a good multimedia device.”

Nokia is the dominant mobile phone maker in India. Sony Ericsson holds 13% of the market and to tackle the competition, the Swedish-Japanese handset maker plans to release the Bravia-branded mobile phones in the country.

Sony Ericsson already sells Walkman and Cyber-shot branded handsets world wide, while Bravia mobile phones are at the moment only available in Japan.

The phone maker expects India to contribute almost 25% of the global handset business over the next two years, and is willing to include other Sony’s brands in the mix in order to succeed.

Also as a part of the “big India plan,” the company is ramping up its manufacturing facility in the country to churn out almost 10 million handsets a year. Most of these will be low cost, entry-level devices, though.

Now we can only hope, once they’re released in India, Sony Ericsson will also bring Bravia handsets to other parts of the world.

K330, will be available in white, and the W890 Walkman in gold. The latter looks really good and certainly remind us on its gold predecessor, W880, although only the backside is golden.

Other than the new color, both devices remain the same specs wise and again we’re not sure why Sony Ericsson doesn’t issue some release about it. Without it we’ve no clue where you can get these, nor how much they cost, though I guess price remains the same… More photos follow after the jump.

Two Zeemote Ready games will come pre-installed on the device, with a further fourteen additional games available through the Fun & Downloads section at Sony Ericsson’s website.

As for the W760i, it’s probably one of the best mid-range feature phones, sporting a 3.2 megapixel camera, built-in GPS receiver, media player and much more.

W760 to the country. However, the image on left is everything but a reliable indicator that will actually happen. I would say the bare fact that the W760a model (where “a” stands for America) exists says more about Sony Ericsson plans than the small logo on the device. After all, you don’t have to be a Photoshop master to make that image. Simple pasting the AT&T’s circle is about all it takes…

Anyway, nothing is confirmed at this stage, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we’ll see the W760 hitting the U.S. sooner rather than later. It’s one of the best feature phones on the market, featuring that cool Walkman music player, stereo Bluetooth, GPS, 3.2 megapixel camera, motion sensor, and more.

It’s been a while since I did it, so I thought I would re-visit the “Top 1o” handsets in UK retail - with information kindly provided by Mobile Choice UK. So let’s take contract devices first:

weekly top 10 contract devices in uk retail from 1 august courtesy of mobile choice uk

Not surprisingly the Tocco has made an appearance at the top of the chart, but it closely followed by Nokia’s star performers, the 6500 Slide, and N95 8GB. Nokia and Samsung also have a smattering of other devices each, comprising most of the rest of the Top 10.

As regards Prepay, it looks kinda like this:

Samsung again occupy the top of the chart, but after that, it’s Nokia and old favourite Sony Ericsson all the way… a real mixture of older devices, plus newer budget ones in there too!

                C902's 5MP camera

…. well probably is the answer. And why the question? Well, read on…..

Sony Ericsson were kind enough to email me and let me know the C902 is now available (has been for a little while) - it comes with a much-touted 5MP camera. This is interesting to me, because I would contend that certain 5MP Mobile camera handsets do not take great photos (I’ve said as much before).

Oddly, the handset that I thought took the best pics (from the variety that I have had) was the SE K800i - it was only 3MP, but they were mind-blowingly good pixels from a very diminutive device! It’s successor, the K810i, didn’t seem quite as good to me. Moving on then to the K850i, again, I didn’t think it was quite as good - and that was a full 2MP more.

But of course the Megapixels only tell part of the story - the optics, and of course the camera module management software play a large part in deciding the image quality. So it was with great interest that received the email today, re-affirming that I could purchase the C902 - and my question still stands…. will the 5MP camera be good enough?

By good enough, I mean will it deliver everyday-usage shots that perceptibly are free from noise, have good colour balance - but most importantly - that I believe are good? Perception of quality is in the eye of the beholder, and if your opinion on anything is that the quality isn’t there, then you are right - and so is everyone else, with their own opinions. But only your opinion counts if it is your device!

In my opinion, 5MP camera modules on devices should be able to produce a reasonable picture - good enough to print out on a 6″x4″ paper at least. From my past posts, the consensus appeared to be that really the N82 from Nokia was the best all-rounder. So, I contend, will the C902’s 5MP camera deliver the goods? Anyone who is owning one and using the camera, please do feel free to add a comment to this post!

Krussell, one of the premier names in consumer electronics cases, has just released a report detailing the “Top 10″ best selling mobile phones in July 2008. The figures are based on the number of cases purchased for each specific device, and should be taken as a loose interpretation of general handset sales in July 2008. Being one of the largest and well-known case-makers in the mobile space, Krussell’s sales figures could be argued to be somewhat indicative of overall cellphone sales.

“The launch of the 3G Iphone from Apple on July 11th had great impact on the sales in July as well as in June, says Ulf Sandberg Managing Director at Krusell. Main focus for this month should probably be put on the two newcomers from Sony Ericsson, that are expected to climb a step or two in next month’s list.”

                  The list:

                  1. (1) Apple iPhone
                  2. (5) Nokia 3109
                  3. (3) Nokia E51
                  4. (4) Nokia 6300
                  5. (-) Sony Ericsson C902
                  6. (-) Sony Ericsson C702
                  7. (7) Nokia N95 8 GB
                  8. (8) Sony Ericsson K810i
                  9. (9) Sony Ericsson K530i
                  10. (6) LG KU990
                  () = Last month’s position.

The data represents sales in over 50 countries, spanning 6 continents, around the world. As expected, Sony Ericsson and Nokia’s flagship shooters made the cut, as did the iPhone. Interestingly, the Nokia 3109 took second place.

                  Krussell
