Sony Ericsson BeiBei gets pictured
If there's one thing Sony Ericsson does well, it's pumping out tons of super-stylish and slim candybar/monoblock handsets powered by UIQ. If there's one thing Sony Ericsson does well, it's pumping out tons of super-stylish and slim candybar/monoblock handsets powered by UIQ. The newest unannounced monoblock from the Swedish-Japanese duo is the SE "BeiBei" that you see pictured here. Thanks to the folks over at The Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog, we've got this nice, clear spy-shot of the Sony Ericsson BeiBei for you to enjoy. The matte black and brown finish really does justice to the BeiBei's facade.

Check out all those navigation keys on the front-face of the BeiBei, it's almost overkill. But, if the Sony Ericsson BeiBei launches with UIQ 3.3, we'll forgive the overloaded keypad and go about our merry, UIQ 3.3-way.

Whether Sony Ericsson will actually go live with the BeiBei is up for debate, but there's no amount of speculation that's going to stop us from keeping our fingers crossed.

While the rest of us XPERIA X1 fans are eagerly waiting to get our hands on a review unit, or any unit for that matter, WMExperts has managed to score their very own Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1! Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1! They flagship XPERIA superphone from Sony Ericsson will be powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and will sport:

    • Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900Mhz)
    • HSDPA/HSUPA
    • WiFi
    • Bluetooth
    • aGPS
    • 3.2 Megapixel Camera
    • 1500 mAH Battery
    • Qualcomm's MSM7200A CPU, 528Mhz
    • 800×480 resolution Touchscreen
    • MicroSD for expansion
    • MiniUSB
    • 3.5mm headset jack for music
    • 110 x 53 x 16.7 mm
    • 145 grams

From WMExperts' impressions of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, the upcoming superphone from Sony Ericsson is an incredible entry into the world of Windows Mobile. There's not much other than the size of the keyboard that is cumbersome or not amazing in any way.

I  had a chance to actually hold the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 in my hands for a quick photo-op at CTIA Las Vegas 2008, but I didn't manage to actually play with the device for any appreciable length of time. I didn't think my few minutes of playtime warranted a full post, so I'm glad the guys at WMExperts got to review this beauty in full. I can personally attest to the "butter smooth" sliding mechanism on the XPERIA X1. The keys are a joy to use, but the keyboard is a bit wide and will likely to a problem fro some smaller-handed geeks out there.

Flash Lite will come pre-installed, this is Windows Mobile 6.1 and Microsoft made it a point to let the press know that the version of Flash Lite in Windows Mobile 6.1 will be the only mobile Flash solution to play full desktop Flash.

Head on over to WMExperts for the full review.

The Sony Ericsson G502 and Z780 were announced today, no price points were given, but supposedly they're going to be affordable when they hit the market in the second quarter of 2008. The Z780 above looks like an amazing device, with the specs to match, but there are 2 versions apparently. SE's official PR says it has a QVGA screen, yet SE's product page for the Z780 says otherwise. Full specs (to the best of my knowledge) and images after the jump.

The G502 is a 2100 MHz HSDPA eqipped monoblock with triband 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/EDGE. It's quite small at only 109.0 x 46.0 x 13.5 mm and weighs 83.5 grams and you get a 2 megapixel camera. Same 240 x 320 resolution we're used to, 262k colors and that seems to be it. It's quite stunning if I do say so myself, I can't say whether or not it will be a hit since there isn't a price … but if it is under 250 EUR expect it to fly off the shelves, more picsture here.

      g502.jpg

The Z780 is an interesting creature, it has quad band GSM/EDGE and triband 850/1900/2100 MHz HSDPA and AGPS, but it has a pitiful 128 x 160 resolution screen with 262K colors. Weighing in at 96 grams at a not so slim 95.0 x 48.0 x 17.0 mm with only a 2 megapixel camera, you have to ask yourself, is this worth it? If it had QVGA it would be a hit, but apparently Sony Ericsson doesn't get that. I'm hoping the resolution is a typo, even Engadget doesn't know wtf is up. More pictures of this device here.

Sony Ericsson booth tour CTIA Las Vegas 2008
Sony Ericsson, not one to break the cone of handset-silence at CTIA Las Vegas 2008, didn't have anything new to show today. They won't have anything new to show tomorrow, or the next day. The booth was small, but they did have a live music show. An electronic music DJ and violinist make for an […]

XPERIA X1 were the biggest highlights of the booth. Sony Ericsson's Cybershot cameraphones and cool Bluetooth watches made a showing, but the XPERIA X1 was the center of attention. And, this time, Sony Ericsson actually let me touch the Windows Mobile 6.1 superphone(!).

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is an incredibly solid and slick handset. The slider mechanism is smooth and springy. The keyboard is a joy to use, it provides great tactile feedback. And, the display is just amazing. Having 800 pixels span the width of the display makes for some incredibly sharp images.

From the pictures, you don't really get a sense of the size (and heft, obviously), so let me tell you that it fits very nicely in the hand. It's not too light as to feel cheap, but not so heavy that you are burdened with another load in your pocket.

Unfortunately, Sony Ericsson is still tweaking their custom panel UI overlay on the newly announced Windows Mobile 6.1 OS. That meant the device was still slow to respond to some inputs, but this thing's got some serious potential.

The XPERIA X1's launch is still a long way off, so I'm not going to hold our breath for this thing any more. I've come to terms with waiting for this superphone to become a reality.

      Enjoy the pics.

Z780. To be fair, don't know why it take them so long, but in this business it's all about timing — so they gotta have the reason. Anyway, the image above illustrates how the upcoming Z780 holds when compared to its predecessor, the Z770 model. I like both phones, and I'm honestly not sure why another similar phone is needed. Then again, I've no doubts Sony Ericsson knows what it's doing, especially in the mid-range market…

G700 was introduced alongside the much-better G900 model at this year's Mobile World Congress (3GSM) in Barcelona, Spain. We never thought it will cross the Pond and somehow we still doubt that's the case, even though it just passed the FCC hurdle. Sony Ericsson is known to push virtually all of its devices through FCC, but fails to deliver them to the U.S. market.

Still, I want to be an optimist here. UIQ is set to help Motorola push the Z10 and hopefully their future UIQ-based smartphones in North America. They're even organizing two UIQ Fast Track events in Boston and San Francisco this May. Sony Ericsson could certainly take advantage of UIQ's presence on the continent and aside from launching the G700, also release the WiFi-equipped G900 model.

We've nothing official from the Swedish-Japanese folks, it's just me speculating at the moment. Hopefully, this will go beyond my wishful thinking…

Sure 22.3 million devices have shipped, a 2% increase from Q1 2007, but with the average selling price of said devices falling to 121 EUR compared to 134 EUR this time last year, the high end phones that do make money sold in much fewer numbers. Sony Ericsson blames the drop in profits to increased spending in R&D, to that I say are you buying all your scientists a triple 30 inch Mac Pro and feeding them gourmet food while they have their scalps massaged by Swedish supermodels?
