Sony Ericsson W910i FC Bayern Edition

Havana and Kent editions, and now the Swedish-Japanese handset maker has partnered with football/soccer club Bayern to release the special version for the sport fans. The device doesn’t seem to look much different than the original W910i, except the cool-lookin’ red earphones. It should (if it’s not already) released via T-Mobile in Germany…

  • UIQ is now a 50/50 joint venture between Sony Ericsson and Motorola

UIQ, Sony Ericsson and Motorola held a press conference today, which I had the pleasure of attending, where they announced their new strategy to become an open platform. What exactly does that mean? Anyone can own a piece of UIQ, in fact as of today Sony Ericsson no longer owns 100% of UIQ, but instead they split the company 50/50 with Motorola. Why would they want to do this? To make other companies interested in building devices on top of UIQ less frightened of the fact that the future of the operating system they’re using sits in the hands of one company.

There have been relatively few non Nokia products based on S60, why would a manufacture want to push an operating system that is so heavily influenced by the hand of a major competitor? UIQ on the other hand, after being purchased by Sony Ericsson in February of this year, has been implemented on a Motorola device called the Z8 with more hardware being expected in 2008.

Among the tidbits of information announced at the show was the fact that UIQ is now going to gain a picture and movie editor:

    videoandphoto.jpg

As well as the user interface being extremely customizable. The text is blurry, but in the first picture it says “draw your symbol to unlock,” and in this case it is a heart. The second third and forth images are all showing the same thing, someones contact information, but it shows how versatile and robust the future presentation foundation of UIQ will be in letting phone manufactures present data to the user:

    ?

This is a brilliant move and is sure to put some pressure on Nokia to open up their S60 platform as well. I’m hoping Samsung joins this new UIQ foundation because when you have three of the top four companies in mobile phones working together then you are undoubtedly going to plant the seeds for a beautiful flower to blossom that could not have otherwise grown from one entity.

Let innovation cross breed, in the end we win.

K850i Cyber-shot and W910i Walkman phones. These two are top of the line products from the Swedish-Japanese handset maker, and are made to provide their users with top camera and music playback experiences respectively. Too bad they’re not running on top of some mobile OS, but I don’t find that to be a deal breaker for many people.

In addition, Sony Ericsson has also prepared the virtual W910i site, allowing users to try the Walkman phone before actually purchasing it. Nice!

      • Really good Sony Ericsson T850i concept

It’s interesting how many Sony Ericsson fan-made concepts we see every week. I guess the Swedish-Japanese handset maker did its homework properly when it comes to branding.

Esato forums. According to him, this 3G-enabled device should come with integrated GPS, 5 MP camera with Xenon flash that can also record VGA videos at 30 fps, VGA screen and the memory expansion slot. Now that I’m thinking, the specs doesn’t look that futuristic and I guess we could expect something like this released during the second half of next year.

What follows are 3D images of the T850i concept phone made by Peter Geerts.

        • Sony Ericsson W890i prototype leaked, sold illegally and now reviewed for your pleasure

          w890i.jpg

Someone in Poland got their hands on a Sony Ericsson W890i. We don’t care how they did it, who they contacted or when it happened, we’re just happy that a group of Sony Ericsson fanboys that write over at SE-Center got their hands on it. The review is in Polish so we’re at a loss of words for what these ninja spies had to say. It is obviously a prototype due to the SE 123 markings on the back, we’re going to have to wait for a retail unit before judging this unit. No 3.5 mm headphone jack = not interested, no matter how awesome TrackID is, I refuse to have a bulge (pictured above) hanging off my device. More pictures over at my Flickr gallery here.
